What to clean before you move in Moving into a new house or apartment is exciting! However, it also comes with a lot of work. You might think that moving in and unpacking is all you need to do, but there are some areas of the home that you probably want to clean before you do. After all, you don’t know how well the previous occupants cleaned before they moved out. Here’s a list of things to clean before you move all of your stuff into your new place:

Before you put any food in your need fridge, give it a good cleaning with a sanitizing wipe. Also check other appliances in the house. It’s likely that your oven will need a good degreasing, and your dishwasher might have some built up gunk needing to be removed.

If you’re renting a furnished place or the previous owners threw in some furniture as a part of the deal, lucky you! You just want to make sure that you have that furniture cleaned. We don’t mean just spray it with a fabric refresher, we mean have a professional upholstery cleaner come out and give it a good deep clean. This will eliminate germs and bacteria, as well as handle any unpleasant odors that may be trapped in the fibers.

Dirty filters will cause dirty air to blow throughout your home. Filters are commonly forgotten about so who knows the last time that the previous residents changed them. Be sure to check all of the filters in your home and clean or replace them as needed. Your lungs will thank you!

Carpets are a haven for bacteria, allergens, and odors of every kind. If the previous owners had kids or pets (or were just messy themselves) there are probably some stains in the carpets too. Hire a carpet cleaner to give your carpets a good deep cleaning a few days before you move all of your stuff so you can enjoy fresh clean carpets without a weird smell.

Tile and Grout

Grout is by far one of the most overlooked places to clean in a house. It also happens to trap bacteria and mold. Some people think that once grout is stained, it can never be cleaned back to its original color, but that’s not true! A good tile cleaner can usually remove build up in your tile and grout bring them back to their original beauty.

The toilet is one of the germiest places in the house. Even if it looks clean, give the toilet a good cleaning before you move in. You might even go as far as to replace the toilet seat if you really want some peace of mind about the cleanliness of your throne.
